Wang Yang calls on IP protection of seeds

China should step up intellectual property (IP) protection for seed industry and create a sound institutional environment that encourages and safeguards innovation, said China's Vice Premier Wang Yang when inspecting the development of modern seed industry in Beijing.

In an international seed industry park located in Tongzhou, Beijing, Wang visited several enterprises and chaired a seminar on promoting the development of a modern seed industry.

He emphasized that seed industry should speed up innovation and optimize resource allocation, while highlighting the necessity to improve the way research achievements are assessed and the goal to develop a modern seed industry integrated with R&D and business opportunities.

Wang called for concerted efforts on scientific innovation and stressed on the significance to improve laws and regulations to combat illicit trade of fake seeds.

"Seed industry is a core industry of national strategic importance, and is essential to the long-term stable development of agriculture and our food security", said Wang, urging relevant authorities to strictly follow the opinions of the State Council on speeding up the development of a modern seed industry and promote institutional reform to provide more favorable policies and financial incentives for stakeholders.
